Despite everything...

"I still believe people are good at heart" - Anne Frank
For the past several weeks I have been asking myself what is a pilgrimage. I even asked my 14 year who in her infinite wisdom at such a young age responded with, "isn't that something you figure out as you go?" It is here that I began the next leg in our journey... With a visit to another wise teenage girl by visiting the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam.

When I was a little girl, Whoopi Goldberg had an HBO Broadway show where she played several different characters. My personal favorite was the junkie Fontaine. Fontaine had a hard life and needed to skip the country so he decided to go to Amsterdam for all the wrong reasons. But upon visiting the town he somehow found himself in the Anne Frank house. For the first time in 20 min, Fontaine stopped moving, talking... Showing what it would have been like to sit in the house for hours every day, not making a peep... Not a word... While exiting he said he saw the poster that read "Despite everything I still believe people are good at heart". It changed the characters whole life around! I then read her diary in 7th grade.

Now here I am, preparing for a journey that will take me to her house. To see where she wrote those words... To be humbled by a presence far greater than our own comprehension. How do I even begin to verbalize what all this means to me?
